While in everyday
use the binaries good bad, right wrong, etc. are found widely
used they lead to problems with psychological, emotional
and spiritual changes. It develops from how words are used.
Words name unique features like ears for rabbit and tail
for pig names the significant part chosen. Should we latch
onto another significant part we may feel or be told we
have it wrong. This very thing is used in politics, advertising
and debates to twist meanings around. Even here we can see
that what happens with words also happens psychologically,
especially where we think in and with words. Anything done
can have an either good or bad result or effect because
good and bad are relative terms but we use them in an absolute
sense. It is not much good getting rid of this, one of our
favorite habits, since then we get rid of both good and
bad. We also judge by products or results when we should
pay attention to the process used to that effect or result.
The main reason is intent or purpose of
our abilities used. Any ability can and is used to BOTH
good and bad effects or results. Our society has us divide
this as good and bad with the bad or unwanted suppressed
or denied hence parked in what Jung calls our shadow side.
This comes from a Zen image of climbing the mountain to
attain an overall view of our selves. As we spiral walk
up the mountain - the sun "our awareness" has
it as sunside and shadow side with the last where we park
what we don't want to do. Besides this good and bad are
relative terms. We may do something intending good but as
received by someone else it comes out as bad for them or
vice versa. For example we should not lie yet most of us
do on suitable occasions, as also implied by the fifth amendment
whereby we need not supply information that would damage
us or put us in jail.
In a word: to be good we have to stomp on
the bad and park the bad in our shadow side. |
To re-script this we need first to accept
our selves warts and all to find and explore our abilities
which we can use to good and bad intent. From there we can
decide whether or not to do so, either

way. We can, for example, manipulate people
and in effect hardly avoid do so at any rate. We will know
in any given situation whether we do so to help the other
person or not rather than use a blanket decision not to do
anything bad. To teach, help a person learn, grow and more
we needs must manipulate them beyond their current level and
kind of understanding or lead them into the hitherto unknown.
This also applies to being able to change our selves. Our
society peddles the notion that our character cannot be changed
whereas it can and to attain spiritual growth we must.
Words name unique features where numbers
do it by degrees so anything which fails a fit to this unique
features thing will be wrong, even if the difference is
slight. We tend to go by the label rather than content.
The point is that our abilities can be used for good or
bad. Therefore to make a change in our psyche it helps to
be aware of this. If a given ability leads to bad results
or effects we try to get rid of the ability which does not
work as elsewhere it has good effects. We have to tackle
our beliefs and ideas about all this so we can deal with
things better. A belief that something is so or real leads
to an expectancy attended by an intent which makes it come
out that way. By looking at and for the wrong part or aspect
of our doings change does not come about. The label does
not make this clear. |
