Article tackles (a) How it happens and (b) What can be done.
We are imprintable with all
inside ongoing and incoming [from our environment] data
throughout life. It follows that a baby and child take in
things holus bolus to refine on details as we grow up. A
major change takes place at our teenage. The child is 90%
input, play and learning while it decides who it is going
to be and what relations with the world to develop, reject
or ignore. This becomes, do to speak, our character and
personality as individuals. When we become adults, a process
that takes several years, play turns into serious and we
begin to setup and run this pattern. The pre-teener is a
frantic collector to complete those details of its life
pattern so far not dealt with and to be explored and completed
beyond the paternal provisions.
All this goes into our unconscious
and from then on only selective aspects of our potentials
will be used. Most commonly this is severely handicapped
by social consensus ideas and the social map of the world.
Neither parents nor children or our society seeks to go
any further than having us a useful member of society, more
or less a workhorse doing a job. We may be able to tinker
up minor details of our selves but that is about all. As
we all know changing our selves in a deeper or fuller way
is near impossible and mostly a lifelong task. Yet within
all of us there is an urge or drive to complete our real
and full self. There would also have to be ability to achieve
this feat.
History oscillates between
phases of exploitation of any good thing going, often well
beyond this working well, versus phases of change from dissatisfaction
with our doings to move into a creative phase, exploring
another way to lead and conduct our lives. This is crudely
called a paradigm change like the one we are now passing
through. This affects us all, as our relations with our
world and each other have to be re-shaped into new patterns.
Mankind has passed through such phases dozens of time, minor
and major.
The blunt rule is that we
either adapt or die. This interaction with change often
starts with rejection to finally accommodate ourselves to
the new reality. Our society is rather prone to procure
change by way of war. It is far saner to adjust to a given
condition in our environment as and when it changes by way
of acceptance. We also liked to imagine that Human Nature
we fixed at birth and education, training us for social
tasks. This is but another fiction a given social consensus
reality peddles. We vastly underrate our incredible potentials
for which not our society but WE have uses and are equipped
to survive with. It follows that for any system as a whole,
the world, society and our psyche alike, change is of the
order of the day since anything and everything in a system
affects everything else. Like growing old some of those
changes are hardly noticed while others appear drastic.
Moving house has been called a traumatic experience, because
we do it so rarely. A nomad does it every day.
Let us say that our character
is a selective filter we install as we grow up since any
baby born can become anything at all. Take a baby from a
most primitive society into the most sophisticated and that
is what the child will accommodate to. The Dutch Royal family
uses servants who speak many different languages and the
royal children can speak them all. The rule here is: One
different language per person, just as with our personality.
We select from the people in our environment those features
we will use ourselves later. In play we work this out. But
we also store all other details and features. People with
several personalities have problems although actors seem
to have few to none with that. Again here our expectancies,
beliefs, assumptions and most any ideas in such matters
strongly affects our doings. What we take or treat as real
becomes part of the filter. If something bad happens we
tell our selves: "It can't be", or it is not real or I can't
believe this. By the power invested in our mind so it will
be.
It follows we can also consciously
change this, children do this so we can still. To change
things Alchemy teaches us to hermetically seal our Athanor,
which is our body, mind and soul. Soul names what makes
us alive and able to do such things. This is to ensure no
other person's views can interfere. Mind manages the patterns
soul contrives
and the body acts it out. This filter can also be made selective,
down to a point of single items
and people's doings. For a catatonic it is all

input and
no output, such a person feeling powerless and for the paranoiac
it is all output and no input with the schizophrenic sitting
nicely in the middle. What are called autistic children
are more interested in what gives inside their minds so
they lack interest in engaging with other people. People
who are only externally oriented, the way our society likes
it, tend to be blissfully unaware of there being anything
interesting ongoing inside. Actually the external relations
are with our close or near environment whereas inside it
is in touch with the rest of the world unto the whole universe.
The best thing,
of course, is to use all this in a flexible and adaptive
way rather than as fixed for once and ever after. Physically,
materially we wear clothes, live in houses with doors and
fences, symbolic of how we
like it. Psychically this can be adjusted in many ways using
our feelings and imagination. I, for instance, tend to come
on rather strong, having been told I have a charismatic
personality not much enjoyed by weaker humans, or, rather,
those who imagine they are weak. So I installed a mirror
shield by which people who

cannot handle it see me as they
imagine me and the stronger can take me as I am, seeing through
this charade. We can also surround ourselves totally with
white or pure light which allows nothing much to enter. I
also like the colour blue and colour symbolism affects this
also. People with a dark or black aura are disliked by most
people. At a higher or soul level we do not need such things
much as then we can take and digest anything that comes as
it comes and awarely, but this is not given to many.
We can, for example, install
a selective filter other than the one we contrived as children
which myth calls being re-born. One re-shapes the psyche
to suit our now new interests and abilities. My preference
is for one that warns me when something I do not want or
need tries to enter and imprint me. The simplest way is
to visualise this by sitting in meditation and imagining
such things. But we can do it with any and all of our senses,
inner and outer. Best is to experiment some to discover
how it works and then make it up as suits our long term
good best. I am not the recipe-maker-for-other-people kind
to tell you what I think or imagine is best for you.
Commonly what we try to shield
out also imprisons us from learning much about it. We are
therefore in a somewhat Catch22 situation between protecting
oneself and being in touch with our environment. Therefore
it is better to self install for then we also know how to
uninstall as and when we choose. Hypnosis makes a good
example. The clear
minded person not wanting to
be hypnotised cannot be unless we use drugs to affect this.
Giving another person our trust enables this although our
society likes to play the authority game whereby we are led
to imagine or believe the expert or trained person can do
this. Anybody can do this and all of us do it to each other
by way of psychic imprints, consciously and unconsciously.
If one person feels strong and another weak the weak one tend
to be more readily imprinted. The same happens with parent
and child too. Our social environment constantly bombards
us with notions that re-inforce the reality belief of its
myth or consensus reality.
Of old man therefore invented monasteries where
people could get away from that. Alchemy suggests we do
not need a special physical environment when we can create
a special psychic environment to carry around with us. We
also give ourselves that glazed look in the eye – nobody
home right now – in situations we don't like. What we may
not realise here is that it may or can render us unconsciously
open to such input unless we take proper measures. One simple
trick is to start daydreaming about being somewhere wholly
else, as most people do. Some very uptight and fixed people
might say: "I don't want to know"; and in many cases we
imagine that if we don't talk or think about it, it will
go away. It does not go away but we cannot notice. A great
deal more can be said about all this but inside somewhere
we all have a tap, channel or connection to our source to
in-form us, if only we ask. We also have the power to change
anything in and about our selves.
